Printing the Day Out of Days

The Dood tab of the print panel prints your Day Out of Days, showing which days each cast member or other element works, holds, travels or is off. You can print it as a traditional grid or as a calendar. This article explains each option in detail.

For an overview of the print panel, including how to open it, print to PDF and set the page size, see Printing Schedules. For more about the Day Out of Days itself, see Day Out of Days Overview.

Choosing What to Print

At the top of the Dood tab, choose:

  • View: Grid or Calendar. See Day Out of Days Views (Grid, Calendar).
  • Category: The category to print, such as Cast, Extras or Vehicles
  • Board: A single board from your current scenario, or “Combined Boards” to print every board in the scenario together as one Day Out of Days

When you change the board, the date range is reset to cover that board’s shooting days.

Grid View

The Grid view prints the classic Day Out of Days chart. Each element gets a row, each day gets a column, and the totals appear at the end of each row. Across the top, three header rows show the date, the day of the week and the shoot day number.

If your schedule has more days than fit across one page, the grid continues onto additional pages. If it has more elements than fit down one page, the rows continue onto additional pages too.

The totals columns are the ones you’ve chosen in the Day Out of Days. See Managing Totals Columns. The status abbreviations, such as S for start, W for work, H for hold and F for finish, are set in your schedule settings. See Schedule Settings.

Header Board

Choose where the date, day and shoot day header rows appear:

  • On All Pages: Repeat the header rows at the top of every page, so each page can be read on its own
  • First Page Only: Show them only on the first page, leaving more room for elements on the following pages

Show

Turn parts of the grid on or off:

  • Color: Shade each cell by its status, such as work or hold. Turn it off to print in black and white.
  • Count: Add a row showing how many elements work each day
  • Days off: Include days off as columns in the grid
  • Grid lines: Draw lines between the cells

Date Range

Choose the first and last dates to print. Click “Reset dates” to go back to the board’s full range. See Setting a Date Range.

Filter by Element Status

Print only the elements that reach a minimum number of days in a particular status:

  1. Choose a status: Work, Hold, Travel or Holiday
  2. Enter the minimum number of days in the “Min” field

For example, choose Work and enter 10 to print only the cast members who work at least 10 days. This is useful for weekly-player or stunt reports. Choose “Show all” to turn the filter off. See Day Out of Days Filtering for the filters available on screen.

Limit to Episode

If your project has more than one episode, choose how episodes are printed:

  • Merged Episodes: One row per element, counting their work across every episode
  • All Episodes: A separate row for each element in each episode, labeled with the episode name
  • A single episode: Only the work for that episode

This option becomes available once your board has day breaks. To set up episodes, see Episodes.

Hide Non-Working Elements

Turn this on to leave out elements that don’t work on the selected board, such as cast members who only appear in other scenarios or boards.

Calendar View

The Calendar view prints the Day Out of Days as a monthly calendar. Each day lists the elements from the chosen category with their status that day, and each page shows one month with its name at the top.

Turn on Show Days Off to include your days off as columns in the calendar. Turn it off to print only the days of the week you shoot.

The Calendar view prints the full date range of the selected board. When you choose “Combined Boards”, the dates are extended to start and end on full months.

Header, Page Numbers and Print Date

Every printed page includes your Day Out of Days header at the top, page numbers such as “Page 1 of 4”, and the date and time it was printed at the bottom. The header can include variables, such as {print_dood_category_name} to show the category you’re printing. Click the info icon next to the header field to see them all, or see Using Variables.

The Day Out of Days header is saved with your schedule and is separate from the Boards and Reports headers.

A printed Day Out of Days gives your producers, casting and accounting teams a clear picture of when every element is needed, and what it will cost.
